Lessons from NASSTRAC’s Annual Conference for Shippers: Tariffs, Contracts, and More
Apr 20, 2017
NASSTRAC’s Annual Conference for shippers recently wrapped up in Orlando, FL. Gail Rutkowski and her team put together another outstanding educational event, and in case you didn’t get a chance to attend, here are a few of the highlights:
- Overall, a major lesson was that shippers who continue to cling to the "status quo" will get left behind. For example, in talking to carriers about their pricing issues, it's obvious that carriers and shippers have to consider alternatives or accept that rates will rise. One of those alternatives may well be the use of a custom tariff to mitigate rate increases.
- A seminar called “Pennywise or Pound Foolish? Best Practices in Transportation Contracting” held by our friends at Benesch reminded shippers that if you don’t have time to get your contracts right the first time, it’ll be even harder to find time to correct mistakes.
- At our annual Washington Update, John Cutler, Nancy O’Liddy and I shared what shippers should expect to see from Washington throughout 2017 and on into 2018, and you can view a copy of our presentation here. The good news is that we may actually see legislation that helps carrier productivity. The challenging news is that passing this legislation will require support from shippers. And that is why we encourage shippers to let their Congressional and Senate representatives know that transportation issues are important issues because FREIGHT MATTERS!
