Recently I've been getting calls from transportation executives who are putting together their transportation budgets/plans for 2019 and looking for advice. One told me he was concerned because his 2018 freight budget is so out of whack that if the same thing happens in 2019, he'll be calling me asking for help on how to write a better resume!
All kidding aside, the rate increases that have hit shippers over the last 9 to 12 months show no signs of relenting. And while the Wall Street Journal has chronicled how this has impacted companies like Deere, Caterpillar, Kraft, General Mills and other publicly traded companies, make no mistake about it, the Perfect Storm is also having an impact on small to midsize shippers.
As companies prepare their 2019 freight budgets, some important questions to address include: Where are rates headed in 2019? (Answer: UP!) Is there any relief on the horizon and will the tide turn back towards shippers in 2019? (Answer: Possible but not likely!) And how can we get our arms around our freight costs? (Answer: See below.)
