Three Takeaways from Last Week's NASSTRAC Conference

There are three takeaways from this year's conference that could have an impact on your freight costs in the future:

  1. First, there's a lot of uncertainty about what's going on in the economy. It's one thing to see soft freight numbers in January and February but when you continue to see soft freight numbers in March and April, some of the carriers are wondering if we are seeing a repeat of 2008 and 2009. And that is why there is concern on the part of the carrier executives about how the economy is impacting the freight market and how this will impact their rates.

  2. The second key takeaway came from our Washington Update with John Cutler, Ben Gann, and myself. We discussed issues like electronic logging devices, speed limiters, the impact of congestion, driver coercion rules, the FMCSA's new definition of "High Risk Carriers, and other important issues. Download a copy of John's PowerPoint presentation to catch up on what we covered.

  3. Third, a panel discussion highlighted the gap between what shippers expect from carriers and vice versa. A lot of this has to do with the flow of information between shippers and carriers. The reason our clients love our Constellation TMS product is because it facilitates great communication between them and their carriers. It can get loads into the system faster, identify equipment that's available, and more. The carriers are looking forward to this kind of communication in the future because it can lead to reduced freight costs.
