In an effort to streamline the NMFC and make determining freight class easier, the NMFTA is launching changes to several product classifications that will take effect on July 19, 2025.

To find out whether or not your products are included in this update, you can check their Docket-20251 or you can use our NMFC lookup tool. With this tool, you can enter your current NMFC Code, and if it is included in NMFTA’s Docket 2025-1, you will see the new NMFC code (if changing) and the new provision.

These changes could have a major impact on shippers, carriers and logistics providers who work with LTL freight. There will be multiple rounds of changes to freight class over time. The second round requires greater research and will be communicated through Docket 2025-2.

In the first round of changes, they plan to implement a "standardized density scale for LTL freight with no handling, stowability, and liability issues." They also plan to condense their commodity listing.

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) currently uses four criteria to aggregate products into freight classes: Density, Handling (or susceptibility to being damaged), Stowability, and Liability (a.k.a. the value of the product being shipped). Freight classes range from class 50 up to class 500.
