Carrier Changes that May Impact your Shipping Practices

One of the things that we are paying close attention to is the subtle but real tension between shippers and carriers. For example, one trend we have noted is that more and more shippers are putting pressure on carriers to offer time definite services. But as some the carriers have pointed out, the move to offer time definite services can have a big impact on their operations and how they run their truck lines.

That is why we were particularly interested in some of the communication we have seen from carriers who are advising shippers that the carriers are now going to be on a tighter schedule when they enter your dock, which means you need to help them achieve quick turnarounds or risk missing your shipment or delivery. For example, our friends at Estes recently announced that they’re going to reset their LTL network and have their last pickup at 5pm sharp. (Estes has given us permission to share some important information about this matter). Estes is not unique and we have seen other large LTL carriers highlight the fact that they will adhere to certain standards in order to balance and properly run their networks.

Watch the video above to hear more about these changes.

Then take a look at three great resources we have to help you work with your carriers:

  1. A note from Estes about their new cut time policy that will help you understand a carrier's challenges.

  2. Our White Paper 12 Steps to Become an Operationally Friendly Shipper.

  3. A Carrier Yield Test Worksheet that will help you evaluate how well you're working with your carriers.
