Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Rule Change Could Help Returning Veterans
The FMCSA recently completed a study to look at the potential effects several rule changes would have. This study, required by the Moving America for Progress in the 21st Century or MAP-21, concluded with three specific recommendations.
They are as follows:
- At present, the Military Skills Test Waiver, which permits states to waive CDL skill tests for service members, is offered to veterans for 90 days after their separation from the military. The new rule would stretch this from three months to one year.
- Service members with training and employment within the military to operate a heavy vehicle will immediately qualify for a CDL.
- Permits a service member located in one state, but licensed in another, to receive a CDL before they are discharged.
