How will LTL pricing changes affect your freight costs and a brief update on labor negotiations at our East Coast Ports

Jan 8, 2025

We hope you had wonderful holiday celebrations and are ready for 2025.

I have a quick question for you. If you take a look at all the different products your company ships, can you tell me which one of your products are “in scope” or “out of scope” when it comes to understanding how the changes that the NMFTA is making to the NMFC classification platform will affect your LTL costs?

If the answer to that question is: “Mike, I have no idea what the heck you’re talking about!" then you need to sign up and join us tomorrow for an extremely important webinar that TranzAct will be hosting with our friends from CSCMP and the NIT League, tomorrow (Thursday January 9th) at 11am CST.

What will the webinar cover?

You’ll be hearing valuable information about things that you need to do right now to protect your company. For example, we will answer the impact of the “in scope” or “out of scope” and explain how it could affect your company.

Let me cut right to the chase and explain why you need to sign up for one of the most important freight webcasts of 2025. Beyond the "in scope/ out of scope” question, our all-star resources will explain the upcoming changes in LTL pricing, how these changes could affect your company, and the things you need to be doing right now before these changes become effective in July 2025. With more LTL carriers migrating towards more density-based pricing, it will definitely impact on your LTL freight costs.

Who will be speaking during the webinar?

Richard Ellis, who is the VP of Pricing for Estes Express and also serves on the board of the NMFTA, will be there to share what’s happening. Geoff Muessig, CMO and EVP for Pitt Ohio, always gives great insights into how shippers and carriers can be working together. And our friend Steve Robinson, CEO of the Supply Chain Project, who comes from a supply chain background with shippers such as Walmart and Starbucks, will be talking about things that shippers need to do in light of the changes that are being made.

So get signed up today and join us this Thursday at 11am CST. Hundreds of shippers have already signed up, and if you sign up and cannot attend, no worries. We will send you a copy of the recording.

Other “stuff” to keep an eye on: A brief update on labor negotiations at the East Coast Ports.

One other thing we want to brief you on is what’s happening at the East Coast ports. The ILA and USMX have come together this week to try and strike a deal ahead of the deadline of January 15th. They have already settled the wage issue and this is going to be centered on the work rules, particularly the use of automation. Will there be a strike? Nobody knows.

One thing we do know is that when President elect Donald Trump signaled his support for the ILA, stating that he wanted to save American jobs, it basically threw in a wrench and caused shippers to say, “Uh oh.” Maersk and other ocean carriers are cautioning shippers to move any containers at those East Coast ports because nobody knows exactly what will happen or how long a strike could last.

If you are looking for insights on navigating these changes, you know what to do. Simply contact your friends here at TranzAct. We’ve gotten some great strategies for managing changes in the classification system, and things that you can do to reduce your costs by as much as 10%. If you’re interested in learning more, give us a call, send me an email, or set up a meeting on Calendly.
