The last decade closed out with many media stories raising awareness of the need for women’s place in society to advance. To start the year on an encouraging, positive note, here are a few areas where we’re seeing progress in the field of logistics or in the bigger picture. We hope that these stories will provide motivation to keep pushing forward.
The industry of logistics and transportation is changing faster every year. To examine the goals of transportation departments and avoid another future capacity crunch, a group of experts from CSCMP in conjunction with others created a new study, Logistics 2030: Navigating a Disruptive Decade. Their findings draw on surveys, focus groups, and individual interviews as well as broader industry research. With so much change each year and increased competition, it is important for companies to always be evolving. Transportation is an industry with growing importance and having a tactical approach, including “tailoring service to customer needs, maintaining operational flexibility and capacity, advancing technology, and maintaining an extensive service network”, has become essential for “transportation excellence”.
Women have come a long way in the transportation industry over the past couple of decades and continue to advance each day. Throughout the industry, women are working towards breaking down stereotypes and misconceptions by showing other women that they too can have a career in transportation.
To put the latest logistics news in perspective, it’s good to step back sometimes and look where we’re stand now in respect to economic trends and indicators. A great presentation covering many of these was recently given by Bob Costello, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of International Trade Policy and Cross-Border Operations for the American Trucking Associations (if you’re a shipper, you can download it here). In this update, in addition to covering broad economic indicators, he focuses on the recent trade agreements made in the U.S. and their effect on the trucking industry.

During this 72 hour window we often see truckers—in particular owner operators and independent drivers—get off the road rather than face the hassles of the inspection program or risk being placed out-of-service, and this can impact capacity.
